Yi Province was an ancient Chinese geographical name and one of the Thirteen Provinces (Thirteen Inspectorates) established by Emperor Wu of Han. At its greatest extent (during the Three Kingdoms period), it encompassed most of present-day Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hanzhong, along with northern parts of Myanmar, and small portions of Hubei and Henan. Its administrative seat was Chengdu in Shu Commandery.

During the Eastern Han Dynasty, adjustments were made to the national administrative divisions, and the seat of Yi Province was set at Luo County (present-day Guanghan, Sichuan).

In 191 CE, Liu Yan, the Governor of Yi Province, moved the administrative seat to Mianzhu.

In 194 CE, the provincial seat was moved again to Chengdu. Thereafter, "Yi Province" also came to be used as an alternative name for Chengdu itself. This称谓 (designation/naming) remained in use almost until the end of the Western Jin Dynasty. However, the city's name, Chengdu, was never changed.

The Historical Atlas of China is an atlas focusing primarily on the historical administrative divisions and territories of China throughout its dynasties, compiled under the chief editorship of Tan Qixiang. The entire work spans from the primitive society to the end of the Qing dynasty, organized into 8 volumes and 20 sections according to historical periods, containing a total of 304 maps (not including illustrations). All maps juxtapose historical and modern geography. The compilation of this atlas began in the 1950s, it was seriously disturbed during the cultural revolution. The internal edition was published in 1975 but contained numerous errors. Publication of Volumes 1-8 occurred successively starting in 1982. The Historical Atlas of China is a rare and valuable resource for studying the historical administrative divisions of China.
