Jiaozhi during the Han Dynasty Period Jiaozhi, also known as "Jiaozhi," was an ancient Chinese geographical name. During the pre-Qin period, it was a branch of the Luo Yue under the Bai Yue peoples, initially covering the area of the Red River Delta in present-day northern Vietnam. After the Qin Dynasty, the "Jiaozhi Commandery" was established, located in what is now northern Vietnam. Following the Han Dynasty, its territorial scope evolved over time. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Jiaozhi was renamed "Jiao Province" (Nan Jiao). The maximum extent of Jiao Province and its cultural relics include areas from present-day Guangdong Province to the northern part of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
In 111 BCE, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty conquered the Nanyue Kingdom and established three commanderies in the northern part of Vietnam: Jiaozhi, Jiuzhen, and Rinan, implementing direct administrative control. For over a thousand years thereafter, although the Jiaozhi region experienced repeated rebellions, it remained largely under the direct jurisdiction of successive Chinese dynasties (Han, Eastern Wu, Jin, Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Southern Han, and Ming).

All maps juxtapose historical and modern geography. The compilation of this atlas began in the 1950s, it was seriously disturbed during the cultural revolution. The internal edition was published in 1975 but contained numerous errors. Publication of Volumes 1-8 occurred successively starting in 1982. The Historical Atlas of China is a rare and valuable resource for studying the historical administrative divisions of China.
