The World Wide Web has changed the way humans live and work. It may sound like a cliché, but it is true. The World Wide Web is spreading faster than inventions such as electricity, telephone and television. WebGIS has opened up many new research areas and provided new methods for many existing research directions, attracting the attention of academia, government and business communities, as well as the public.
Section 10.1 of this chapter introduces the research hotspots and frontiers related to WebGIS, mainly including spontaneous geographical information, collaborative GIS, geotagging, geoanalysis, location-based services, online virtual reality, sensor networks, semantic networks and cloud GIS; Section 10.2 introduces the characteristics of the next generation Internet and the World Wide Web, and looks forward to the future development trend of WebGIS.
