A MAC (Media Access Control) address, or MAC address, or hardware address, is used to define the location of a network device. In the OSI model, the Layer 3 network layer is responsible for the IP address, and the Layer 2 data link layer is responsible for the MAC address. Therefore, a host will have an IP address, and each network location will have a MAC address specific to it.
